The Pocket Shot

So… I know I’ve been severely slacking on the content, but what I do promise to do is rodeo03.jpgpost when I do find something absolutely “revolutionary” within the alcohol industry. So, here it is, surfing the net last week a friend of mine came accross the Pocket Shot and was kind enough to send it my way.

The Pocket Shot is an innovative new concept that provides the consumer with “grab and go” convenient and user-friendly package for alcoholic beverages. Packaged with a distinctive shape to resemble a miniature bottle complete with bottleneck for easy pouring and a high quality sheen with bright graphics (See Right).

Each Pocket Shot comes in a 50 ml single serve flexible stand-up pouch containing 80 proof varietals including:

  • Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey Aged Four Years
  • Imported Caribbean Gold Rum
  • Premium, Triple Distilled Vodka
  • London Dry Gin
  • Especial Gold Tequila Imported from Mexico

Pocket Shot developer Jarrold Bachmann devised the idea for the product after seeing the workers at his farm in South Africa buy simple, crude 25 ml plastic sachets of alcohol to celebrate payday.

Now here is what I envision for the future of the Pocket Shot.  Concerts… Tailgates… Sporting events from coast to coast… Never again will you have to pay an arm and a leg to buy a beer at the stadium, or, even worse, have your jaw drop as you realize you have walked into an (gasp) alcohol free event!

Party School Update – 2009 Edition

High School class of 2010 take note of this year’s Party school ranking as per Princeton Review :

1. Penn State University, State College, Pa.

And not that the rest of this list even matters anymore, but here you go:

2. University of Florida, Gainesville, Fla.
3. University of Mississippi, Oxford, Miss.
4. University of Georgia, Athens, Ga.
5. Ohio University, Athens, Ohio
6. West Virginia University, Morgantown, W.Va.
7. University of Texas, Austin, Texas
8. University of Wisconsin, Madison, Wis.
9. Florida State University, Tallahassee, Fla.
10. University of California-Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, Calif.

“On behalf of the whole student body and alums around the world I graciously accept this honor. First off I’d like to thank Jesus Christ and God cause without them (Him? Are “they” the same? I digress, doesn’t matter really) none of this is possible. Secondly I’d like to thank Natty Lite, Beast, and of course when we felt saucy we upped our game and therefore we have to thank the complete line of fine Miller and Bud products. I’d be negligent if I didn’t give a shout out to my boy Smirnoff for keeping me warm during football games and for helping hoards of students grind up on each other and not consider it inappropriate. This wasn’t easy to beat out warm weather schools (suck it every school in Florida and Cali) that can party year round in temperatures above -5 degrees and without a coat of ice on the ground from October to April which makes it VERY hard to not fall down and bust your head while intoxicated. But when we thought we couldn’t do it, when we heard rumors that Florida was making a strong push late in the semester, we dug deep and with the inspiration of our new Democratic president (after 8 years of hardship) we took up his cause with a rousing “Yes We Can” and came out number 1! If you are reading this and didn’t go to PSU and need a support group, we meet every Saturday at Sidebar during football season, we always welcome those that need guidance on how to throw down. Well, I’m sorry, I have to go, I’m starting to tear up. We Are…”

Well put by my buddy Justin after our prestigious school was finally given the credit it deserved!

To which I must give a resounding “PENN STATE”!

22nd June 2009

Hey everyone! With the official 1st day of summer having just passed (the Summer Solstice was yesterday, June 21st), I figure its a good time to discuss one of America’s favorite summer activities, BBQ’ing.

No matter where you are (at your house by the beach, at a local park, at a lake, in the mountains or just hanging out in your backyard) BBQing is one of the easiest and most robust activities to get started and have fun with. So read this article, then invite over all your friends and start the fun! If you have no friends, not a problem, just head down to your local watering hole the night before. Find a member of the opposite sex that is in your league, and invite them over the next day for a day of fun in the sun.

Step 1, if you don’t have a Grill, go buy one. It doesn’t matter if you buy a cheap portable grill from a Supermarket end cap, or if you go all out on top of the line grill at Home Depot. The important part is only that you have a grill. It gives people a reason to come out.

Step 2, get the food. The standard is Burgers and Dogs, but it really doesn’t matter, so long as it’s something everyone will enjoy.

Step 3, Entertainment. This is also easy. It’s hot in the summer, so people typically like activities where they don’t have to work too hard. Start with plastic cups, a ping pong ball and a deck of cards. Picnic tables can be easily used for Beer Pong, Flip Cup, or Card games. If you enjoy slightly more active activities, bring a Frisbee, football, and Horse Shoes. Have a catch, play some shoes, all fun things to do while drinking…and activities that even un-athletic people can enjoy.

Step 4, get some beverages. People work hard, so they’re always up for letting loose when the time comes. Go pick up a 30 pack/Party Ball of your favorite light beer. By light, I don’t mean get Miller Lite or Bud Light…I mean, pick up a beer that is not heavy. Don’t be the Jackass that shows up to a summer BBQ with Guinness or Sam Adams Winter Ale. There’s a reason the Mexicans drink beer like Corona. When it’s hot out, you want to feel refreshed. Also, depending on the type of girls you hang out with, you may want to pack some Twisted Tea or Hard Lemonade. Alcohol allows people of all races to make even the most mundane conversations or activities more interesting or fun, so it’s important to do your best to get everyone involved by having a beverage they might enjoy. IMPORTANT: Remember to check your local open container laws as well. Cops do a great job at ruining a good time, most places only require that you enjoy your beverage in a plastic cup (as opposed to right out of the bottle or can.) Final word on this, don’t forget the water! People get dehydrated as hell in the summer. It’s always good to have some water around to keep you going and refreshed and hangover free.

That’s all you need: the Grill & Food are the excuse to get people outside. Beer & Fun are what keeps them there. Anything on top of that is just gravy. What is your favorite BBQ Beverage? Feel free to share it with the site; perhaps your suggestion will inspire someone else’s summertime fun! (For my Northeast readers maybe its a good idea if you can suggest some good BBQ/Drinking activities to do in the rain, as that is what we’ve seen the past 18/23 days!)

7 Guidelines and Benefits of Cooking with Alcohol

Instead of giving you a recipe for something delicious this week, and “giving you the fish”, I’m going to teach you how to “catch the fish”…

…Meaning, I want to teach you how to use alcohol for yourself in cooking without a recipe per se.

Beer Mugs - Set of 4 by ForumBeer, wine and other liquors aren’t just for drinking anymore in your kitchen!!!

1. Alcohol enhances and carries flavor in your cooking. Flavors will be brought out more and the dish will be more rich and layered in flavor.

In fact, when cooking with alcohol, the dish will certainly taste even better the next day or if you allow a soup or stew to simmer for 1-2 hours more.

2.  Most often when cooking with alcohol, you are going to allow the dish to simmer or continue to cook to the point that the alcohol dissipates. In other words, the alcohol will evaporate, leaving behind the flavor it added.

Of course, when adding Bailey’s Irish Cream to a coffee after dinner, the alcohol will still remain. Or if you’ve marinated olives, they will still carry that alcohol with them…

…But if you’re deglazing your sautée pan with red wine when creating sautéed mushrooms, the alcohol will surely evaporate and the liquid reduce.

coconutpalm.jpg3.  When making a certain ethnic food from a particular geographic area, try to use alcohol, whether it be a wine, beer or liquor, that is from that region or associated with an ethnic food.

In other words, when cooking Asian food, use saké. When making a rich German dish, use a great German beer. When making French food, use a good Burgundy wine. When creating a Caribbean masterpiece, use Rum or even Malibu Rum. A great stroganoff calls for a crisp Russian Vodka. I love Mezcal or Tequila in my Chili Recipes!

4. If you’re using a certain Read the rest of this entry »

St. Patty’s ’09

Where to go in NYC:

Start it off right with the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade starting at 11:00 a.m. on 5th Avenue and 44th Street, heading up 5th Avenue to 86th St., where it turns east towards 3rd Avenue where it eventually ends there around 3:00 p.m.

For an original event, i suggest heading over to The Village Pour House

The Uptown (982 Amsterdam) VPHouse will be playing true Hibernian music while offering drinks specials on pints of green beer, Guinness, car bombs and shot/brew combos. However, the name of the game is “limericks” such as, “There once was a man from Nantucket…” Well, some people forget these bawdy poems are actually named after a town in Ireland—so, to show love for St. Patrick’s Day, guests will be invited to recite their favorite rhyming ditty and receive a free green beer for their effort. Even sweeter, no cover to party at this 21+ event that starts at 7 p.m.

For those of you in the “Downtown” area, don’t worry, their 11th st and third ave location (Village Pour House) will be featuring: green apple martinis, “Kiss Me I’m Irish” shots of, er, something green and of course…the infamous green beer. There’ll be a lucky leprechaun on hand for photo moments and also to provide one fortunate fella’ or female with his hidden “pot o’ gold” (please ask before you tear at his trousers) as well as a psychic who will see what’s to come…we’re no mediums, but when green brew is involved, it’s an easy prediction that bathroom visits will be in your near, near future. Party starts at 5 p.m. with no cover and runs until the break o’ dawn (or they close—whichever comes first).

The New Look

As many of you have read about and some have already explored, we have created a unique bartender application (Click on The Bartender Graphic on the left).

How To Use:

1. Choose your ingredients from OUR list on the Left.
2. Make sure you check for ICE, as it counts towards the results’ score.
3. When you’re done, click on SERVE ME PLEASE, and the results will appear immediately under the Bartender with up to 50% relevance.

Of course this is just our BETA version of this application.  Our full version (Pictured Below) will be released with the launch of our ‘full’ website along with some other useful applications.

In the meantime, it is very important to us that we get this application as close to perfect as possible your feedback is KEY, so don’t hold back and feel free to leave your comments on the page.  For a sneak peak at the SizzUp Bartender’s new look, see below:

St. Patty’s Come Early

St. Patrick’s Day is our favorite holiday here at SizzUp… For obvious reasons.  Back when I went to Penn State we would start lining up at the bars around 8 AM, sometimes earlier on this “highest of holy days” (For a college kid).

That in mind, it is never too early to start planning your St. Patty’s Day celebration!  So for those of you in the NY/NJ area here are a couple things to keep in mind:

Hoboken claims to host one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New Jersey (possibly the entire Eastern seaboard), and this year will be no exception. Mark your calendars early, though, as Hoboken isn’t a town that follows the norm. This parade is always held on the first Saturday of March in order to beat out New York City for the best performers and the most celebratory spectators—this year, on Saturday, March 7, 2009, beginning at 1 p.m., the parade will kick off at 14th and Washington Streets and head south on Washington, with a reviewing stand in front of City Hall (Washington and First Streets).

Hit the Bottle to Live 4 years Longer

WinesHere’s a good excuse you shouldn’t quit drinking entirely. It has been found that a glass of wine every day means less chance of keeling over with an unstable ticker.

Dutch researchers found that those who drank on average less than a glass a day had a lower rate of cardiovasular death, with winos faring beetter than beer and spirit drinkers. Read the rest of this entry »

West Coast Singles

Finally – For my West coast readers here is a list of options for the single folk out in LA and San Fran on this V-day.

Los Angeles

For those singles out there looking for love this Valentines Day head on out to the Foundry on Melrose. The Foundry on Melrose is doing a favor for those sans date on Valentine’s Day by turning their lounge into singles only pickup zone. While couples dine in the restaurant, those flying solo can enjoy cocktails, swing jazz and special menu items. Bolder singles can send “let’s be friends” cocktails to unsuspecting strangers for half-price. If you pick someone up they might even let you into the dining room.  Could be fun… No?  The live music starts at 9 PM.

For the Anti-Valentines crowd, you can head on over to Baja Sharkeez (3801 Highland Ave. Manhattan Beach).  Sharkeez is promoting the night’s events like this: “Cupid is a Drunk With a Bad Aim,” – sounds like a lot of mismatched drunken hookups to me – which pretty much sums up their unsentimal sentiment towards V-Day. The bar is encouraging the despondent to decorate the dartboard with pictures of their exes (Uncensored of course), while the bartenders screw up your aim with $3 broken heart shots. The sexiest dressed partygoer will win $200, and possibly a date.
