The Legends of Bartending

This bartending competition was established in the late 90’s, with one goal only; to crown the best, fastest, trickiest bartender out there! Legends takes place each year in the Entertainment Capital of the World, Las Vegas, Nevada. Due to its vast popularity, in 2001, Legends became the first invitation only world competition. Now only the best flair bartenders are able to showcase their talents on the Legends stage. Only In NY

Its a crisp cool night at Yankee Stadium… The rain has stopped… Opening day 2008… The last at “Old” Yankee Stadium, “The House That Ruth Built.”  Introductions pass… Boos for the Jays, Standing “O’s” for the new manager Joe Girardi amongst others.

The American Flag is unveiled out in center field, a young Army Cadet stands at the mic behind home plate… Queue the National Anthem…

Notice anything? Maybe how TERRIBLY off key he goes around “Bright Stars”??? And even funnier how the crowd lets him know how bad with a big “Oooooooooo”…

Yea… Only in New York will you experience that… Opening Day and the crowd blatantly acknowledging how that nice young Cadet singing our Nation’s Anthem just went off key… OUCH!

St. Patty’s Day Pubs

Looking for a place to enjoy a “traditional” St. Patty’s Day.  Try one of NYC’s many Irish Pubs.  New York Magazine has even taken the liberty of breaking it down for you:

Midtown

Stout NYC
The newly-opened cellar bar brings Stout’s total to five, which offer 130 different bottled beers and 22 on tap.
Take note: Celtic-rock band and Stout favorite Seythian takes the stage at 4pm. Pipe bands will also be stopping by after the parade.

Connolly’s Pub & Restaurant
The W. 45th St. branch of this midtown chain of spacious Irish pubs is most notable for being the local home of Black 47, one of the city’s best-loved bar bands. The politically-conscious pub-rockers are performing at Knitting Factory St. Patty’s night, but expect plenty of the same raucous energy in their absence.
Take note: A limited menu of Irish specialties, including corned beef and cabbage, is served; live Irish bands (Shilelagh Law and Gael Force) perform from noon to the wee hours at the W. 45th St. and 14 E. 47th St. locations.

Ulysses’
This 130-foot Financial District bar is almost as sprawling as James Joyce’s masterpiece. And co-owner Danny McDonald knows a thing or two about pouring Guinness—he owns the venerated Swift Hibernian Lounge and Puck Fair, and a bus sometimes shuttles free-wheeling patrons to all three.
Take note: The menu will emphasize Irish fare, including corned beef and cabbage. Plus, the Emeralds will play Irish rock at 9 p.m.

My favorite amongst these however has got to be Stout. The place is just huge and will surely feature some authentic live music for the occasion.  It is perfect for the St. Patty’s day crowd!

MDW Contest

One thing we plan to do here at SizzUp is to encourage our users to submit their own original recipes… To encourage this we will have a monthly contest (Prize TBD, but I swear it will be Very Cool!) where you will have the opportunity to submit recipes via our special “mixing” platform (also currently in the works, and also Very Cool!)…

But… Since we have not yet launched I thought it would be considerate of me to go out to the web and find some another contest to wet your appetite.  Here’s what I found:

MixedDrinkWorld.com is sponsoring a drink submission contest ending 12/31/07.  Here’s how you do it:

2. Submit as many recipes as you can from now until December 31st 2007.

The “Champagne Brunch”

Ever needed an excuse to wake up Sunday morning, drink Mimosas, and eat Eggs, Pancakes, French Toast, or whatever your personal breakfast choice may be?  Enter the “Champagne Brunch”…

In college, minimum once a semester, we would host such an event.  Only we didn’t limit ourselves to just Champagne, but instead to a fully stocked bar, and an endless breakfast buffet starting at 10 AM on a Sunday morning. 

How To Get It Done:

  • Create the invite list.  In college things were easy as we would just make it a “dated” event or invite a sorority or two (I mean who is going to turn down such an event??). 
  • Create the menu… All your favorite breakfast foods apply.  Might I suggest a large fruit tray (Strawberries, perhaps chocolate covered are also a great addition), and endless stack of pancakes, perhaps a create your own omelet station (If you want to be fancy), maybe some deviled eggs, the usual sausage and bacon, and of course trays and trays of scrambled eggs.
  • Finally, and perhaps the most important element of the “Champagne Brunch,” the CHAMPAGNE!!!  And whatever other drinks you deem necessary.  Our bar always consisted of a couple handles of vodka (in case you prefer a screwdriver over the Mimosa) and orange juice of course, some wine, and an assortment of beer.
  • The Music – A key element, no brunch should be without.  Depending on what you want to spend and the ambiance you want to create, anything from a stereo, to a DJ, to a live band will do.   If you are going with live music, one cost saving tip of note, check Craigslist or the local colleges in the area for some cheap talent (Just be sure to get a sample, or a few referrals before you hire them). 
  • Key Suggestions to add a touch of class - Renting both a Champagne and Chocolate Fountain (For the strawberries of course) are sure to impress.

Dictating a Successful Event:

  • Did the majority of your guest list spend the hours of 12 PM – ??? Dancing/Drinking/Continually Eating? Did they perhaps blackout this time frame, consequently wondering why they were waking up in some unknown place at JUST 8 PM the same day with a hangover??? If you can answer yes to both, or do not know the answer yourself, than YES, the event was surely a success!
