2009 – Party School Update

Around this time back in 2008, I posted the top 10 party schools as per Princeton Review.  I thought it was time for a little update, with some of our own comments and insights of course! HS Seniors take note:

2009 Top 10 Party Schools

1. Universtiy of Florida – Up from #4 last year.  Their multi-year championship runs in football and basketball would even get Stephen Hawking to the keg!

2. University of Mississippi – Stable at #2… Because what else is there to do in Mississippi?

3. Pennsylvania State University – Up from the 6 spot.  They’ve almost got this right!  Check out game day at this Big 10 school and you’ll see why it earns its spot in the top 3.

4. West Virginia University – Down from #1 a year ago. While I can’t explain the drop, I can’t even explain why they’re in the top 5? I guess this calls for a visit!

5. Ohio University – Athens – Up from #9.  Reasoning… See Mississippi.

6. Randolph-Macon College – Unranked last year.  Never heard of the place, can someone enlighten me on this one?

7. University of Georgia – Down from #5.  Another football powerhouse.  Drop in ranking must be due to their dissapointing football season. Clearly depressed fans party nearly as hard!

8. University at Texas, Austin – Down from #3.  Someone please explain to me how this happened? UT is known for partying, what warrented such a drop?

9. University of California – Santa Barbara – Up a slot from #9 – The school is on the beach!  Do I need to explain any further?

10. Florida State University – Unranked last year. Personally I don’t see how they made the top 10.  I was lucky enough to go to the Orange Bowl back in 2005 (PSU vs FSU) and it was like a Penn State home game.  Their fans couldn’t travel 7 hours to our 21!

SizzUp’s replacements for the 10 spot on the list:  University of Wisconsin-Madison, University of Alabama, Auburn… And I can probably think of 10 others more deserving than FSU!

Underage Crackdown

bcs09.jpg

Just a heads up to all those headed to the College BCS Championship game tonight.

“The state Division of Alcoholic Beverages and Tobacco will be sending 12 to 16 agents to Thursday’s game between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Florida Gators.”

Penalties will be enforced!  (Read More Here)

Now I went to PSU in State College, PA.  For those of you who may not know, PSU is known for being hard on those caught drinking underage.  All are punished!  Now I spent all 4 of my football seasons (3 for which I was under 21) at PSU tailgating hard before every game (6-8 games/year).  Not ONCE did I get an underage violation.

Here are my 2 simple rules for staying out of trouble while still having a “good time”:

1 – Red Plastic Solo cups & Water bottles are your best friend.  In other words don’t be obvious by sitting there with a glass beer bottle or aluminum can full of beer.  Take the time to pour it into a paper/plastic cup or even a water bottle, it’ll be your savior!

2 - Drink smart!  Don’t drink to the point where you are falling over yourself and drawing unwanted attention.  I know this might be hard for some of you, but its better than paying that hefty fine.

It is as simple as that!  Sure the police presence is annoying, but it doesn’t have to ruin your fun!

The Bloody Caesar Cocktail Turns 40

The Bloody Caesar CocktailDeveloped in 1969 by a Calgary bartender, Canada’s extremely popular Caesar cocktail, also known as the Bloody Caesar, turns 40 years old and is now the closest thing to Canada’s national drink.

It has been 40 years since Walter Chell, bartender at the Owl’s Nest Bar in the Calgary Inn (now the Calgary Westin Hotel), in Calgary Alberta, invented the Caesar cocktail to celebrate the opening of a new restaurant called Marco’s. The original Caesar cocktail recipe was similar to the already popular Bloody Mary cocktail, with one major exception Read the rest of this entry »

Liquid Smoking

Liquid SmokingA new drink called, Liquid Smoking is hitting the UK’s market shelves. Initially designed and launched in the Netherlands, Liquid Smoking might be the solution for smokers to actually give up smoking. It’s cheap, which is good, and on top of that it is meant to give a very good feeling of euphoria and relaxation, sort of like getting high legally! No age resrictions, recommended to people over 15 years old though. With a price around £2.00 and available in pubs and stores, it might be a good idea to go out there and ask for it. Who knows, quiting might not be that hard after all. We’re expecting to see it in the UK before Christmas. Let’s see how many of us are going to turn to this for our new year’s resolution… Read the rest of this entry »

Officials approve bar’s £10 “all you can drink” night

Pint of beerNovember, 2008
London, UK

Who else other than an Australian-themed bar in Acton, London, would take such a decision and move forward with what could be the start of an interesting ‘drinking’ era. One thing you could say about British people is that they surely know how to drink. A simple combo with our famous Australian friends and the party is on! Although, they tell us all measures are taken, and strict rules apply, we think the result will be somehow the same. Go to work, go to the pub, drink, drink, drink and then ask for directions on how to get back to your own place! For some of us, that’s surely the end of a ‘beautiful’ night, and the start of a horrific morning to work.

What’s even funnier is that the Ealing council has ruled that the Australian-themed bar in Acton is not encouraging irresponsible drinking with the cut-price deal. Yeah, right!!

Don’t Drink and Shoot

Here’s something I have not YET managed to do while drunk… And am pretty sure I never will (I hate guns!):

“A drinking spree ended on a bloody note after a junior policeman accidentally shot self while showing off his service firearm, a radio report said Tuesday.”

The man suffered a gunshot wound in the left temple, after accidentally pulling the trigger of his service firearm during a drinking spree along P. Burgos St., Guadalupe Nuevo in Makati City (Philippines).

His drinking buddies and bystanders rushed him to the Makati Medical Center for treatment.

Now if this story was submitted to me for the contest it would surely win!  Think of it as something to “aspire” to (No, not seriously).

Macho Macho Man

Guys, so now that summer is winding down and its no longer appropriate for you to be ordering pina coladas (or insert other frozen fruity concoction).  Our good friends at Mainstreet have put together a list of cocktails you can order while keeping your manhood in check.

Rusty Nail

This is a simple, yet classic and still popular, cocktail, typically made with two ounces Scotch and one ounce of the honey-sweet scotch whiskey Drambuie. Usually this one is served on the rocks, and has a slightly warm, biting taste that can be made sweeter or less so by changing the amount of Drambuie added. It’s easy, classy, and great in the wintertime — and you don’t even have to get it with the traditional twist of lemon on the glass if you prefer not to.

Black & Tan

Here’s the beverage for the beer drinker that wants more variety than a typical American brew. The black & tan has been around as long as beer itself, and exists in countless variations and names. For the traditional recipe, you can’t go wrong with a pint consisting of half Bass ale and half Guinness Stout layered on top. Its delicious, its not overly fancy, and it’ll satisfy the guy who’s not in the mood for liquor.

Manhattan

When in doubt, you can’t go wrong with this old standby that will simply never go out of style. It was a favorite of Frank Sinatra’s, and if that’s not good enough for you, then maybe you should just stick to apple juice. There are more variations than you can count and the debate still rages about whether rye or Canadian whiskey is the best, but as long as there’s whiskey, everybody wins. For the sake of simplicity, stick to the recipe found in the classic drinking tome “The Fine Art of Mixing Drinks:” five parts whiskey, one part vermouth and a dash of bitters shaken over ice and strained into a cocktail glass. Whiskey-to-vermouth ratios change from bartender to bartender, but either way, this strong-yet-simple drink is a true classy man’s beverage.

Old Fashioned

This fine concoction is one of the undisputed kings of cocktails, and perhaps one of the first cocktails period. Walk around clutching one of these, and people might actually think you’ve got taste and class. If you’re really lucky, they’ll forget about your hidden love for Jell-O shots. Muddle a sugar cube and dash of bitters together in a glass, add ice, soda and a couple ounces of bourbon, stir, and find out why true gentlemen have been ordering these since the 1800s.

Flaming Dr. Pepper
Sometimes you just have to get back in touch with your beer-chugging college side. When the urge hits, you can either be like everyone else on Earth and go for the cliché Jäger bomb, or you can be a little more adventurous and go with this ode to pyromaniacs everywhere. Fill a shot glass ¾ with Amaretto, then layer a high-proof liquor such as 151 rum on top. Light the shot on fire and let it burn for a few seconds. Drop it into a glass of beer and chug — and if you did things right, you’ll swear you’re drinking a Dr. Pepper soda. If you did things wrong, you’ll probably need a Sharpie to draw your singed eyebrows back on.
Caipirinha

Don’t let the look fool you — this national drink of Brazil appears to be a mojito, but has a potency and taste to keep a guy happy. And few people on Earth party better than Brazilians, so take their advice and mix one up for yourself. It’s made with the increasingly popular Brazilian liquor Cachaca, which like rum is made from sugarcane, giving the drink a sweetness that makes it perfect for summertime sipping. Simply pour cachaca over rocks, add a pinch of sugar to release the flavoring, mix in some limes, and stir. It’s manlier than a mojito, and it takes a lot less time to make!

Jack & Coke, Gin & Tonic, Etc.:

These choices are about as conventional as Bud Light, but they’ll always be around — and that’s what makes them an acceptable last resort. You can never feel bad ordering one of the classic liquor and soda concoctions. Just don’t dare ask for something where the mixer involves juice or fruit of any sort, or your friends might mistake you for someone who still tries to find Zima in the grocery store. Experimentation is also key here, as the combinations of liquor and carbonated mixers are limitless and, oftentimes, surprisingly delicious.

Winehouse Back To Drinking Ways

Winehouse back to heavy drinking

“Troubled singer Amy Winehosue is back to drinking. She sparked concerns when she ordered 48 bottles of Jack Daniels recently.”

Concerns? 48 bottles of Jack should raise more than a few “concerns.”  Hope she got the Costco bulk discount!

Winehouse was performing at a concert and she asked organisers for two crates of alcohol.

While it is common for artists to make requests for food and beverages before they arrive it is quite insane to order such a large amount that clearly her and her team of performers could not possibly consume in one night…  Or maybe they were just underestimated?

In regards to the occurance a source was quoted saying, “Everyone was really excited about getting Amy to perform here, and naturally there were now fears that she was planning something wild. Whiskey is better than heroine – but not 48 bottles of the stuff.”

Death Penalty

It appears that the Death Penalty can now be applied to those who steal beer from their significant other.

In Chicago yesterday, “Regina Williams, 55, of the 1000 block of North Waller Avenue appeared in Cook County Bond Court before Judge Israel Desierto, charged with first-degree murder in the slaying of Willie Anderson, 77, of the 2200 block of West Monroe Street.”

Miss Williams and Mr. Anderson were sitting in Anderson’s car outside his home when Williams became angry that he was drinking her beer. They began to quarrel, and Williams allegedly pulled a knife she carried for protection and began stabbing Anderson. As Anderson yelled for help she continued to stab away.

After the stabbing took place she seemed to show no remorse as she yelled to her victim’s nephew, “You better come get your uncle—I just killed him.” She then proceeded to get back in the car and drink her beer.

Oh, and did I mention she is currently on probation for a 2007 felony conviction for aggravated battery?  Go figure – I guess they should have kept this one locked up!  Hope they don’t screw this one up a second time.
