The New Look

As many of you have read about and some have already explored, we have created a unique bartender application (Click on The Bartender Graphic on the left).

How To Use:

1. Choose your ingredients from OUR list on the Left.
2. Make sure you check for ICE, as it counts towards the results’ score.
3. When you’re done, click on SERVE ME PLEASE, and the results will appear immediately under the Bartender with up to 50% relevance.

Of course this is just our BETA version of this application.  Our full version (Pictured Below) will be released with the launch of our ‘full’ website along with some other useful applications.

In the meantime, it is very important to us that we get this application as close to perfect as possible your feedback is KEY, so don’t hold back and feel free to leave your comments on the page.  For a sneak peak at the SizzUp Bartender’s new look, see below:

St. Patty’s Come Early

St. Patrick’s Day is our favorite holiday here at SizzUp… For obvious reasons.  Back when I went to Penn State we would start lining up at the bars around 8 AM, sometimes earlier on this “highest of holy days” (For a college kid).

stpatty.gif

That in mind, it is never too early to start planning your St. Patty’s Day celebration!  So for those of you in the NY/NJ area here are a couple things to keep in mind:

Hoboken claims to host one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New Jersey (possibly the entire Eastern seaboard), and this year will be no exception. Mark your calendars early, though, as Hoboken isn’t a town that follows the norm. This parade is always held on the first Saturday of March in order to beat out New York City for the best performers and the most celebratory spectators—this year, on Saturday, March 7, 2009, beginning at 1 p.m., the parade will kick off at 14th and Washington Streets and head south on Washington, with a reviewing stand in front of City Hall (Washington and First Streets).

Hit the Bottle to Live 4 years Longer

WinesHere’s a good excuse you shouldn’t quit drinking entirely. It has been found that a glass of wine every day means less chance of keeling over with an unstable ticker.

Dutch researchers found that those who drank on average less than a glass a day had a lower rate of cardiovasular death, with winos faring beetter than beer and spirit drinkers. Read the rest of this entry »

Grasshopper Beer from Big Rock Brewery – Review

My husband was creating one of his fabulous German dishes last week, and we had run out of beer.

So, he ran up to the beer store and had anticipated on procuring a wheat beer he needed/wanted for it.

They didn’t happen to have it, so the sales clerk advised him to get Grasshöpper from Big Rock Brewery, which is also a wheat beer.

Photo left: c/o brewpalace.com

What a real treat it was! It should have been, this beer won a Gold Medal in 2007 at the Canadian Brewing Awards.

You could tell it was a wheat beer, had a beautiful “wheaten” color. I think it would be perfect for any German food you’re eating or making at home, as well as for a Tailgating beer. It’s crisp and refreshing, and has a great way of clearing your palette before the next bite of food!

Big Rock Brewery is in Calgary, Alberta and was established in 1985. They take pride in all of their handcrafted and batch-brewed beers, and use traditional brewing methods…

…But the only use premium wheat & 2 row barley malts, choice imported hops, their very own ale & lager yeasts, and water from the Rocky Mountains. Their beers are naturally carbonated with no preservatives or additives.

West Coast Singles

Finally – For my West coast readers here is a list of options for the single folk out in LA and San Fran on this V-day.

Los Angeles

For those singles out there looking for love this Valentines Day head on out to the Foundry on Melrose. The Foundry on Melrose is doing a favor for those sans date on Valentine’s Day by turning their lounge into singles only pickup zone. While couples dine in the restaurant, those flying solo can enjoy cocktails, swing jazz and special menu items. Bolder singles can send “let’s be friends” cocktails to unsuspecting strangers for half-price. If you pick someone up they might even let you into the dining room.  Could be fun… No?  The live music starts at 9 PM.

For the Anti-Valentines crowd, you can head on over to Baja Sharkeez (3801 Highland Ave. Manhattan Beach).  Sharkeez is promoting the night’s events like this: “Cupid is a Drunk With a Bad Aim,” – sounds like a lot of mismatched drunken hookups to me – which pretty much sums up their unsentimal sentiment towards V-Day. The bar is encouraging the despondent to decorate the dartboard with pictures of their exes (Uncensored of course), while the bartenders screw up your aim with $3 broken heart shots. The sexiest dressed partygoer will win $200, and possibly a date.

Philly Singles

To continue my post from yesterday, I wanted to provide my Philadelphia single readers with some info on how to make this couples holiday less depressing:

antivday.jpg

Options:

Start your weekend early – Tonight, Thursday 2/12 – Join hundreds of singles at Mad River Bar and Grille (126 Chestnut St.) for Philadelphia’s Largest Singles Anti-Valentine’s Bash (Just $15 if you click here and buy now). Valentine’s Day is not just for couples anymore! Enjoy a night of networking, flirting and dancing. Fun icebreaker games will get you in the mood to meet new people. There will be delicious hors d’oeuvres, prize give-a-way’s, contests and discount drink prices to get you in the spirit of this fantastic party. This is positively a party you won’t want to miss and maybe cupid might point his arrow your way!

On Saturday head out to the Anti-Valentine’s Day Scavenger hunt (Just $20 if you click here and buy now) at Rum Bar Lounge & Restaurant ( 2005 Walnut Street). Join other singles for a fun and competitive Anti-Valentine’s Scavenger Hunt. You and your team will be finding those fun and sometimes racy items that will ensure a great night! Teams will have 3.5 hours to collect as many of the items on the list as possible and bring them back to the starting point. You must stay in your full group at all times and arrive at your final destination as a group. It is recommended that at least one person in each group have a digital camera. You are only allowed to use your feet and SEPTA to get around. This amazing day will end back at the Rum Bar for tales of true adventure, continuing the fun over drinks. Rain Or Shine – Dress for the day.

Finally if you want to keep it simply, head on out to one of Philly’s oldest ale houses, Mcgillin’s Old Ale House (1310 Drury St.) for $5 Pitchers: Pabst Blue Ribbon (all day) $5 meal: 6-oz Sirloin Steak, and if you want to feel healthy, 99¢ buys a side salad.

To close it out, for my West Coast reader’s, we’ll look into options in LA & San Francisco tomorrow just in time for V-day weekend.

‘Single’ in the City

So its Valentines Day and you’re single.  Aside from drinking your depressed self into a stupor while alone in your apartment what can (SHOULD) you do?

If you’re in NY here are some options:

New York

Get warmed up at Tribeca Tavern (247 West Broadway b/w White & Walker) and shoot some pool while enjoying $3 domestic beer from 4 – 7pm.

Then head on over to the LES @ Label Lounge (174 Rivington b/w Clinton & Attorney) for “Lustr Saturdays” – Underground disco, featuring DJs Sushi Steve (Stereo-Type, Deprogram), Chris Alker (Stereo-Type, DUI, Deprogram) and M68 (Labor of Love). $4 beers and well drinks from 9-11 p.m.

Or maybe just spend your night @ the wonderful Town Tavern (134 W 3rd near MacDougal) for their “Cupid is Stupid” event.  For $20 enjoy a 2 hr top shelf open bar with complimentary “love potion” (I’m sure thats just some form of flavored chick shot) from 9-11pm and Hors d’Oeuvres.  Sexy bartenders IN COSTUME will be present.

Please check back tomorrow for the Philadelphia V-day Singles Edition.

Best & Worst Drinking Buddies

I was drunk the other night… Surprise, surprise I know… And me and my buddies were arguing over who the best and worst drinking buddies of all time would be.  Here is what I can recall:

In the #6 Spot:

Scissorhandsbarneyste.jpg

Best – Barney (NPH) – The ultimate wingman from the new hit CBS show “How I Met Your Mother” never goes home alone, if you know what I mean…  And neither would you, he would see to it!

Worst – Edward Scissor Hands – He had scissors for hands!  I wouldn’t want to be around when he begins to lose coordination… IF he can he even hold a beer. Although I guess we wouldn’t have the game Edward “40” hands without him.  Still, definitely earns his spot on the “worst” list.
