If you love great, new combinations of alcohol and food, here’s a great one for you - plus an awesome review of a new beer I finally got to try out!
Yesterday around noon, we had a business meeting with one of our clients.
We were going to barbecue, but it poured down rain in Dallas, so we decided to have a nice mixed bagel and cream cheese spread as we discussed some great marketing ideas.

This was to be an impromptu meeting that was upbeat and very casual. So, a few of us decided upon trying a new beer we hadn’t tried yet - Land Shark Island Lager (thanks, Kent).

St. Patrick’s Day is our favorite holiday here at SizzUp… For obvious reasons. Back when I went to Penn State we would start lining up at the bars around 8 AM, sometimes earlier on this “highest of holy days” (For a college kid).

That in mind, it is never too early to start planning your St. Patty’s Day celebration! So for those of you in the NY/NJ area here are a couple things to keep in mind:
Hoboken claims to host one of the biggest St. Patrick’s Day parades in New Jersey (possibly the entire Eastern seaboard), and this year will be no exception. Mark your calendars early, though, as Hoboken isn’t a town that follows the norm. This parade is always held on the first Saturday of March in order to beat out New York City for the best performers and the most celebratory spectators—this year, on Saturday, March 7, 2009, beginning at 1 p.m., the parade will kick off at 14th and Washington Streets and head south on Washington, with a reviewing stand in front of City Hall (Washington and First Streets).

Here’s a good excuse you shouldn’t quit drinking entirely. It has been found that a glass of wine every day means less chance of keeling over with an unstable ticker.
Dutch researchers found that those who drank on average less than a glass a day had a lower rate of cardiovasular death, with winos faring beetter than beer and spirit drinkers. Read the rest of this entry »

My husband was creating one of his fabulous German dishes last week, and we had run out of beer.
So, he ran up to the beer store and had anticipated on procuring a wheat beer he needed/wanted for it.
They didn’t happen to have it, so the sales clerk advised him to get Grasshöpper from Big Rock Brewery, which is also a wheat beer.

What a real treat it was! It should have been, this beer won a Gold Medal in 2007 at the Canadian Brewing Awards.
You could tell it was a wheat beer, had a beautiful “wheaten” color. I think it would be perfect for any German food you’re eating or making at home, as well as for a Tailgating beer. It’s crisp and refreshing, and has a great way of clearing your palette before the next bite of food!
Big Rock Brewery is in Calgary, Alberta and was established in 1985. They take pride in all of their handcrafted and batch-brewed beers, and use traditional brewing methods…
…But the only use premium wheat & 2 row barley malts, choice imported hops, their very own ale & lager yeasts, and water from the Rocky Mountains. Their beers are naturally carbonated with no preservatives or additives.

We don’t really know where this came from, but we assume that people who drink beer for water could be asking ‘How long can one live solely on beer’? Well, the answer is definitely not that simple. Conducting a research experiment on this, by feeding individuals simply beer, would be extremely unethical. However, we’re sure some of you would do that for free, but please, don’t!
There are a few facts though that could give us all a hint on whether or not this might be possible. Rather, how long it would take before you start throwing up parts of your liver. The story goes back to the Seven Years War of 1756-63, where physician to the English fleet, John Clephane, conducted this sort of clinical trial. Read the rest of this entry »

Obama’s Inauguration, a moment in history that will be remembered forever!
As a tribute to the incumbent president, Sixpoint Craft Ales brewed what they call “Hop Obama Ale”. The beer is described as “a stout gone porter with kriek lambic.” We are told that the flavors are individually unique yet “…gain their solidarity from their indivisibility.”
So where do you find this celebratory ale? While kegs of “Hope Obama” are not in every local pub we can tell you that a few of your local NYC pubs have them stored away to tap on inauguration day.
Where it can be found:
Vintage Irving - Near Union Square (120 E 15th St)
D.B.A - East village (41 1st Ave near 2nd st)
Can anyone out there help us with where it may be found around the nation come Jan. 20th???
